In Volume I, "Premonitions", Danny "Mouse" Ormont has girl troubles from Patti, the vixen he has yet to meet. His mystery girl appears in dreams, family photos, watery reflections, sunsets – even a jealous dog! His puppy love girlfriend, Debbie Strong, thinks he’s gone totally bonkers. Even Danny can’t believe what is happening until he foretells specifics of his parents’ upcoming business trip. Elsewhere, Patti Connor grows up fast under the shady influence of her teen half-sister, Lynn. Convinced she caused her parents’ divorce, Patti revolts against her troubled life. Together with Reb, boyfriend du jour, they join Lynn’s pack of hooligans. Miles away, Danny endures the brunt of Patti’s antics through a synergy with Patti’s presence. …Could Danny actually be Patti’s pet?

The new kid in 6th grade, it’s a battle of wits when Danny clashes with bully, Mark Parks. And, once Patti joins the class, imagine the impossibilities! Smitten, Danny must win his dream girl’s heart – despite Mark’s advances. Patti preys on Mark’s jealousy, manipulating her class pets into executing her hidden agenda. High jinks rules the school, but trouble unfolds in the neighborhood. Is Patti involved?

"Mouse" must reveal his burning secret to Patti, or die trying. Can he prove they share a past, if not a future? Only Patti holds the key to his puzzle. In class, a team-building game intensifies Danny’s psychic abilities reading Patti’s thoughts, anticipating her every move, and… Look! Her necklace! The triple spiral – that mysterious coin the pair cast into good luck charms on the beach years ago! Can Danny keep Patti honest by invoking their time-honored Gemini Promise? Surely, this’ll prove he’s her Boy from Tomorrow!

I can't say one good thing about this. Not one. But I can say a lot of bad things.

Characters: Can't get a handle on Danny. Why is Debbie so prominent in the first half of the story, if she's utterly forgotten when Danny changes schools, and why is she in the story at all, if Danny is psychically linked to Patti? Why does Danny's mother have to talk like the Lucky Charms leprechaun? "Daniel shall be the lad's name, and he'll be a-facin' many a-lion's den, he will!" Is the "author" aware that the pharmacist/neighbor guy practically wears a sandwich board saying "I'm A Child Molester"? (Nothing happens along those lines, but see below.) Am I supposed to care about Patti, when all she does is get Danny in trouble?

Plot: Is there one? What is the purpose of the dream-linking between Danny and Patti, and what are the circus dog dreams supposed to mean?

Pacing: Why spend so long in kindergarten with Danny + Debbie 4Ever, and then abruptly switch to Being the New Kid Is Hell? Why does the story go on so long after the fire -- shouldn't that have wrapped everything up? I get the impression the "author" wrote this straight through with no outline and no reviewing.

Dialogue: Does not sound one bit like real people talking. And yet there's so. much. of it. Every word of every conversation, even if it's about what to have for lunch, has to be transcribed. And there are not enough dialogue tags, and not much, if any, variation in speech patterns.

Prose: Where to begin? There is not one well-written sentence in this entire story. "The cyclops groped the class with a suspicious eye." "The painstaking process of erasing the abomination was insurmountable." "The meek one dove under a curtain of haberdashery."

He can't even describe action. "Mr. Ormont embraced his wife. Tears soaked her husband's shirt while her husband gestured for a neighbor to inform the firemen." In another scene, Patti finds her mother in bed with some random guy and dumps a bucket of ice on them "with a hefty heave-ho." *One minute later*, mom "causally filed her nails".

Other: I believe these characters are in kindergarten when this happens. At least, that's how old they were in previous scenes, and there's no indication that a year or more has gone by since then. Ahem:

"Danny brushed against Debbie's cheek. She turned and surprised the unsuspecting boy with a smack on the mouth. Her soft lips felt warm and inviting. They held hands, took a step back, gazed into each other's eyes, and giggled. Danny clasped the girl's waist and drew her near. Debbie draped her arms over his shoulders. Under the sanctuary of the willow, the smitten couple embraced -- never wishing to release each other. Their heads rested on each other's shoulders resembling two swans. He caressed her hair with gentle strokes, and she reciprocated. Again, their lips met, united in a timeless kiss. Two hearts burst with unimaginable bliss: thrilling, mysterious and new. Locked in each other's arms, they swayed to their own sweet music."

As I said in the headline, I can't believe an adult, an educated professional, wrote this. Has he never *read* a book? I would say I give him props for finishing, but it doesn't have a resolution, so it's more like he got tired of writing and called time-out. I see there's a second volume, so probably this "series" will go on until he runs out of steam. Or until his wife or someone pleads with him to stop.
